Pioneer merchant Skiles started to Ky. In 1790 by Ohio River flatboat, surviving Indian capture en route. He settled in Bowling Green, 1803, and later moved to Three Springs on the Cumberland Trace. Here he established a thriving mercantile business. Skiles died, 1816. Three Springs declined as an area trade center in 1820s when travel was diverted through Bowling Green.
