Two characteristics contributed to the record-breaking number of world records and Olympic records set during the 2002 Olympics. The Oval is the highest indoor speed-skating oval in the world at an elevation of 4675 feet. The thinner air at this altitude results in less wind resistance on a skater's body. And less air is frozen into the ice itself, creating denser ice with less friction to a skate's blade. These effects and the number of new records earned the Oval the title (at least temporarily) of "The Fastest Ice on Earth".
