The top outline of this sign is a east-west cross-section of the geology of Kanab's locale. Kanab is located on the flat portion of the left side of the sign while the right half of the outline represents the red cliff and butte which rises on the eastern edge of Kanab proper. An accompanying photo shows the rise of the butte and this sign is made from the same red rock as the butte.
Kanab is less than one day's drive from all of the National Parks on the Grand Circle, several National Monuments, plus a scenic Utah State Park. This leads to the slogan on the welcome sign as you enter Kanab from the north: "The Greatest Earth on Show". Much of this area is renowned for cliffs and buttes of the same red colors and geology which resenbles the outline along the top of this sign.
