In days gone by this was a common name, and the link to wine making is clear. Sometimes, however, it may refer to the Worshipful Company of Distillers who have a grape bearing vine in their coat of arms.

Originally,the sign may simply have consisted of a piece of vine hanging outside the door of the establishment. This may have been a habit brought to the country by the Romans. A proper pub sign such as this is much more satisfactory.
