St James’ Church was designed by George Edward Pritchett (1824-1912). The church was constructed between 1860 and 1861 and consecrated in 1861. The style is the individual interpretation of the Early English style by Pritchett.
The church consists of a 4 bay nave, South aisle, South porch, a raised chancel, East apse and South West clock tower. The whole is covered by a red tile roof, which has conical form to the tower, apse and vestry. The body of the church is constructed of knapped flints with red brick banding and stone window and door dressings.
The church clock is by the famous English clock maker, Sir John Bennett. The organ is by “Father” Willis and dates to c 1881 and was renovated by Willis in 1946.
