Henderson was at one time a small semi-rural community about halfway between Las Vegas and Boulder City. It started as an industrial area supplying magnesium for the defense industry and morphed into a center for manufacturing rocket fuel. But a major fire at the PEPCON plant and the resultant huge explosions destroyed the plant, never to be rebuilt. With the explosive growth in population of the Greater Las Vegas basin, Henderson has become a residential suburb whose boundary with Las Vegas is totally indistinguishable.
