Sign welcomes us to the Village of
Rouses Point, first settled around 1783 by Canadian and Nova Scotian refugees who were granted tracts of land in reward for their services during the American Revolution. The village is in the Town of Champlain; it is named for Jacques Rouse, an early settler.
The Village calls itself "The Northern Gateway." Being the northernmost village in New York State, it is thus the northernmost entry point into New York from any other state or Canada (Quebec).
In this cluster are welcome signs to the State of New York and the Town of Champlain, and a historic marker identifying this as the location of Fort Montgomery.
