Martin is a town in Bennett County, South Dakota, and is the County Seat. Its population was 1071 at the 2010 census.

In 1910, unalloted Indian Trust land, in what is now known as Bennett County, was ceded to the Federal Government by the Oglala Sioux Indians and opened for settlement on October 1, 1912.

Surrounded by the tall prairie grasses of central South Dakota, the town of Martin serves a market area of about 8,000 people. As the largest community in Bennett County, Martin is the center for business, education, and medical care.

Martin rests on U.S. Highway 18, 130 miles southeast of Rapid City, the state's second largest city, and 150 miles southwest of Pierre, the state capital. It is located 58 miles south of Interstate 90 on S.D. Highway 73 within 1 1/2 hours drive of the Badlands National Monument and three hours drive of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. A distinguishing feature is the city's location between two large American Indian reservations. To the west is the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and to the east is the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
