Middlemarch is a story with many threads concerning the inhabitants of the town Middlemarch.

The first thread in the story is that of Dorothea Brooke, an idealistic woman who marries Edward Casaubon, a middle aged scholarly man engaged on his opus magna. Dorothea thinks that she can help finish Casaubon’s great work, but finds her husband cold and finds that his great work is a failure. She finds friendship in one of Casaubon’s cousins, Will Ladislaw, but Casaubon takes against Ladislaw and won’t have him in the house. In a sad twist Casaubon dies leaving a will that forbids Dorothea to marry Ladislaw without relinquishing Casaubon’s inheritance.

The second thread concerns a radical doctor, Tertius Lydgate, who arrives in Middlemarch with a zeal to reform the voluntary hospital. His work at the hospital brings him into contact with the town’s financier, Mr Bulstrode, a religious zealot and a man with a secret past. Lydgate is ensnared by Bulstrode’s daughter, Rosamond, into an unhappy marriage. The marriage soon leads to Lydgate accruing large debts and he has to seek help from Bulstrode.

The third thread concerns Rosamond’s brother Fred. Fred is in love with Mary Garth, but she will not marry Fred unless he gives up the idea of a career in the church. Unwittingly Mary causes Fred to lose an inheritence which leads to Fred having trouble paying his horse dealing debts. Mary’s father, Caleb, lends Fred the money, which leads Fred to re-appraise his life and train as a land agent.

After the introductory threads are established, a final thread emerges. John Raffles knows about Mr Bulstrode’s secret past and is keen to expose Bulstrode. Raffles is mortally ill and dies hastened by Bulstrode’s ministrations of alcohol and opium. However, Bulstrode is too late as Raffles has already exposed him. Lydgate is also publicly deemed guilty by association with Bulstrode, which forces him and Rosamond to leave Middlemarch.

At the end of the story Dorothea makes the decision that Ladislaw is more important than Casaubon’s inheritence and marries him. Fred, having prospered in his land agent duties, wins the approval of Mary and marries her.

St George’s Church is seen in several scenes, including a meeting between Dorothea and Ladislaw in the churchyard, and a political meeting in front of the church.
