The ruins of this castle are about half an hour's walk from the village of Stanz.
The name dates back to the Schrofensteiner dynasty, who also built the church of Landeck. Schrofenstein castle was already occupied in the late 12th century. In 1196 Friedrich of Schrofenstein is mentioned as ministry official of the bishop of Chur. In 1898 the castle was a fiefdom of the bishops of Chur.
After the country was parcelled out between the counts of Tirol and Hirschberg, the castle was legal court from 1254 to 1282.
In the second half of the 19th century the castle fell into ruins. Today the only thing left is the 12 metres high keep.
Since 1946 the castle ruins have been privately owned and can only be visited from the outside.
