This wat is situated on Trong island (Koh Trong) in the Mekong River, opposite the small northern Cambodian provincial capital city of Kratie ('city' in this case being an honorific—Kratie has maybe 10,000 people). To reach the Wat one must first take the ferry across the river from the town, then walk, or entice a local into a motorbike ride ($1), to the wat on the northern tip of the island.

In appearance the wat follows the usual range of south east Asian Buddhist temples. A prayer building for the monks, one for the locals, living quarters and a few statues in the grounds. The wat does have an air of abandonment. When I visited I found only a few locals working on a boat for the annual 'Dragon Boat' race in Phnom Penh (a major event), no sign of monks. However, I was assured by all and sundry that this was an important temple on the island (certainly the largest) and that on the appropriate occasions monks came and performed services. The buildings of the Wat are spread out over a larger area than I most other wats I have seen. This Wat is clearly of some age, but is undergoing repair and renovations (slowly).

Associated with the wat is a land reforestation program. For a donation ($10 is acceptable) a small tree will be planted near the wat with your name (or whichever name you wish), and the money spent on restoring the island farm land.
