The bench is on the northern edge of the grasses area in Greenwich Park. The back of the bench faces the hill upon which sits the Royal Observatory so anyone using the bench needs to look over their left shoulder to see it. Sitting on the bench, looking to the front, is the National Maritime Museum, with its new wind, slightly to the left. Ahead and slightly to the right is Queens' House. Directly ahead is the covered colonnade that connects the buildings.

The inscription, on the backrest of the bench, reads:
"Sylvia Patricia Irving / 1928 - 2005 / At long last sit / and enjoy the view".
