St. Alphonsus Ligori was the founder of the Redemptorists who sought to help the poor people around Naples, Italy.
This statue is one of several of Saints on the walls inside St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Ligori (1696-1787), went to law school at age 16 and became a famous lawyer. When he lost his first case after eight years of practice, he abandoned the profession and studied for the priesthood. He founded dozens of night chapels to help Naples poor--especially children. He became Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti in 1762. He was canonized in 1839. Read more about him at (

The statue portrays Ligori in his Bishop's garments seated and bearded. He has one foot on a stool...and holds a book on that leg...and is apparently interrupted while making some notes.
