Myiopsitta monachus, the Monk or Quaker parakeet is an introduced non native species to Texas. Given their hardy nature, they have adapted well to urban settings in Dallas, Houston and Austin. About the size of an adult Blue Jay only plumper, Monks are a social and quite gregarious bird...often you may find them simply by listening for their distinctive sounds. The birds have been introduced from the pet trade and as of yet, do not seem to have displaced other bird species, as often happens with the introduction and establishment of a non native species.
They inhabit a variety of power stations throughout Dallas County, preferring to make nests in the upper I-beams of the station structure. TXU has erected platforms designed as nesting locations at a few power stations, but the birds make their own choices.
