Virginia Cascades is located on the Gibbon River in a canyon cut into the 640,000 year old Lava Creek Tuff. At the falls the river cascades about 60 feet down into a deeper segment of the canyon. The falls were name in 1886 to honor Virginia Gibson the wife of Charles Gibson the head of the Yellowstone Park Association concessions from 1886 to 1891.
The falls are accessed via a one-way segment of the old Norris to Canyon Road. There is no established parking area for viewing the falls. The best parking is at a wide spot at the top of the falls and then walk back down the road to various views.
