In 2007, the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department (which operates the Pavilion) won the Governor's Historic Preservation Award.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any information online other than this pdf slide show file (
visit link) from the Governor's office. The Pavilion is one of the last slides. The Department was cited for restoring the lighting which was key to the initial design. According to the pdf file "By 2004, more than a quarter of the 1734 fixtures were no longer functional. The rehabilitation by San Diego Parks and Recreation restored the glowing presence of this landmark in the park."
The Parks Department was also honored with the local San Diego AIA Award in 2006 for this same event. See (
visit link) which includes this information:
"ARCHITECT: Heritage Architecture & Planning
PROJECT TEAM: David Marshall - project architect
City of San Diego: Mario Reyes - project manager
Kathleen Hawenaue - Dist. Mgr, Zina Rummani - Resident Eng.,
Don Spangler, Facilities Maintenance Division
PHOTOGRAPHER: Ed Gohlich
CATEGORY: Historic Preservation"
Note..the default photo showing the lit Pavilion is borrowed from both of the above websites. The other photos were taken by the poster of this waymark.
