The unusual portray of Saint George (in Catalonia called Sant Jordi) is located at the very northern end of famous Barcelona's sreet, La Rambla Catalunya where it intersects Avinguda Diagonal. Here aside of famous representative headquarters of the Diputació Provincial de Barcelona - La casa Serra - is standing metal statue of Knight with shield in one hand and a sword in the other one. It represents patron saint of Catalonia and Barcelona - Saint Jordi (Saint George) and it was made by famous Catalan sculptor, Joan Rebull(1899 - 1981), in 1977. It is interesting, that as a model for the statue he used his son Jordi.
Sant Jordi holiday is a most favourite Catalan holiday, celebrated on April 23 and it is quite similar as Valentine’s Day in western countries. On this day people exchange "llibres and rosas (books and roses)". Traditionally on St. Jordi, it is the male figure that receives a book while he gives a red rose to his sweetheart.
St George was a Christian martyr who during the Middle Ages became the ideal of military valor. The details of St George's life cannot be verified; his life is known through legends, which over time became popular and increasingly extravagant. One of the most famous stories tells of how St George rescued a Libyan king's daughter form a dragon/sea monster.
