Clifford Park - a 52-acre woodland preserve owned by the city of Biddeford and a great place for mountain biking and cross country skiing
Located a few minutes from downtown Biddeford, Clifford Park contains far more trails than we could show on our map. A large map sign located beside the Pool Road parking lot shows the most significant trails and their color-coded trail markers. Although the park can be crossed in a straight line in a half mile, the large number of informal trails makes it easy to get turned around. A compass is recommended for your first few visits.
Old granite quarries on the higher land near the center of the park remind us of earlier days when foundation stones were cut from the park's granite ledges. Ancient trees and a variety of terrain entertain the visitor. The falling waters of West Brook border two sides of the park. A trail is being proposed to connect West Brook Pond, where skating is popular, to allow X-country skiers to reach the park. Black Trail circles the park for a 1.3 mile walk. The marking system uses colored rings painted completely around tree trunks.
Clifford Park was purchased, well below market value, for $1,500 in 1894 from the Clifford family who wished to help preserve its natural beauty for future generations of area residents.
It was dedicated on the 4th of July in 1896. During that festive dedication ceremony, City Councilor Dr. Bassford noted during his remarks, "How many of our citizens are not aware how beautiful this spot is; they have never visited it and do not know of its charm and grandeur. More than100 years later, are we also too busy to enjoy its special beauty?"
Directions to park: From downtown Saco, take Main St south and cross the Saco River. At the first traffic light, take the second left (Hill St) and climb to the traffic light at Pool St. Turn left and go 0.3 mile. Turn right into the parking area for Clifford Park.
