The original station used to be located between Station Street and Crawford Road in East Cannington, and was one of the original stations operational when the Armadale Line opened in 1889.
The original Cannington Train Station was demolished during the upgrade of the rail line from diesel to electric as there needed to be further distances between stations, and the original station was only 500 m from Beckenham Train Station. The new Cannington Train Station near Cecil Avenue is within walking distance of Westfield Carousel shopping centre. This station serves as in important interchange between Thornlie station and all stations between Beckenham and Armadale stations.
The proposal to move the station to it's present location was a critical factor considered during the process in the early 1990s to select a site for the construction of what became the Cannington Tax Office. Coincidentally I was involved in the production of the tender documents for that project, and in the ongoing documentation during the construction and fitout stage. About five years later I started working at the Cannington Tax Office, and commuted daily by train to and from this station until December 1999, when I became a Field Operative and was paid to drive my own car wherever I needed to be, including to and from the office.
