A cut bench mark on the north side of St
Oswald's Church at Paddlesworth.
Although the present church of St Oswald dates from Norman times, indications of
an earlier structure were discovered during repairs made in the 1870's. It would
seem probable that the earlier church owed it's foundation to St Ethelburga,
foundress and first abbess of the neighbouring nunnery at Lyminge. Built of
large flints and dressed with Caen stone at the usual windows, doors and angles,
it consists of a small nave measuring externally 40 feet by 23 feet, with a
chancel measuring 16 feet by 15 feet.
St Oswald was very badly damaged by flying-bomb which fell in churchyard on 13
August 1944. Say hi to "Alvin" next door, he is a friendly Alpaca.
