In Milton, along Canton Street and east of a gazebo, is a white clapboard church that is the First Congregational Church of Milton.

The church is visible from Canton Street. Be sure you are at the right church - there is another clapboard church that is the Unitarian-Universalist church - this was once where the Congregationalists met, as well - I'll get back to this.

The church that is the focus of this waymark is at the end of a U-shaped driveway and another drive along the side to the town hall to the west and the fire station to the rear. The church sanctuary has a large and more modern addition at the rear. There is a steeple at the front end with a tall four-sided spire, topped with a weathervane. There is a belfry with vanes painted black. There are three doors at the entrance. Rectangularly shaped paned windows are above the doors and along the sides.

This church is not the oldest in Milton. That goes to the other white church to the west. The origins of this congregation go back to the pilgrims and Puritans. The first permanent minister was Peter Thacher, who started in 1680. eventually a meeting house was built. In 1834, due to a theological "disagreement" over the nature of Jesus Christ, the congregation split. The congregation that became the "First Parish" Unitarian-Universalist Church retained the meeting house, while the congregation that became the Congregational Church built a new church across the town green. They were able to build a new meeting house in less than a year (hence the date below). Today, the two church congregations are on friendly terms.

The Congregational Church has Sunday Services at 10:00 am. There are various education and fellowship activities associated with this church, and there are charitable activities through their Board of Benevolence.
