The church was built as the Parish Church of Abbotsbury, alongside the Abbey Church of St Peter. The oldest parts of the church are the tower and north wall. Early in the 16th century the double arcade was built and a south aisle added. The flat ceiling of the Nave dates from the 19th century, as do the north and west gallery. The north gallery was removed in 1885.
In the porch is an effigy, in Purbeck marble, of one of the early abbots. It dates from the 12th century and was found on the site of the Abbey Church of St Peter by masons looking for material.
Behind the alter is a fine reredos inserted in 1751 and shows the ten commandments. The barrel-vault plaster ceiling was installed in 1638 and was restored in 1986. The pulpit is probably Jacobean or Tudor. Two musket holes can be seen at the rear of the canopy. This damage was caused when Parliamentary forces forced out some Royalist from the church in 1664. The font is thought to be original with a modern base.
The church was extensively restored in 1885 and again re-order in 1996 in memory of Admiral Sir John Hamilton, faithful member of the congregation.
The tower contains 6 bells which date from 1636 to 1773. The bells were rehung in 1897. The panelled arch of the tower is characteristic of 15th century West Country architecture.
Little of the Abbey Church of St Peter remains. Foundations of the north wall can be seen in the churchyard.
