Headlines June 29, 1933
"4 BANDFITS ROB MANAWA BANK OF $4,000; SHERIFF ORDERS HIGHWAY PATROL.
The First National Bank of Manawa was robbed of between $4,000 and $5,000 at 3 o'clock this afternoon by two young, unmasked bandits. They escaped with two companions in a large seven-passenger Buick sedan, either black or dark blue in color. The license number was either 12438 or 13738 of Wisconsin. They left the city on County Trunk Highway N heading in an easterly direction toward State Trunk Highway 26."
Actually the vehical was a 1932 Nash sedan stolen from the Zenda Oil Company at Stevens Point, WI the previous night.
The only person brought up on charges of the robbery was Forest Case 33, of Wisconsin Rapids, who was acquitted of robbing the Manawa bank. But was convicted of the attempted burglary of the Frank Sikorski's tavern September 1, 1933.
During the depression the First National Bank closed its doors and in 1937 the building was purchased by Eastling Insurance Agency. The Eastling Insuranced Agency still operates out of this building.
There are still 3 operational vaults in the building and the old alarm system is sitting in the front office.
