In 2010 the United States Postal Service began putting bridges on the American Landmarks series of express mail stamps. This particular stamp shows the Bixby Creek bridge along the California coast in the rugged Big Sur region. It's an arch type bridge with open spandrels made of reinforced concrete. At a little over 260 ft. high and over 700 ft. long, it's the largest of several similarly designed bridges along California's route 1 in this area.
The highway, which connects Carmel with San Simeon, was completed in 1937 and was originally called route 56.
