This country church congregation has a long and interesting history dating back almost 250 years ago. For an informative, brief history of Old Bluff Church this webpage has a copy of a church history first handed out at a church reunion in 1992.
The congregation at Old Bluff was formed by Rev. James Campbell, who was born in Scotland about 1705 and came to America in 1730. He settled on 200 acres near the church site in 1757 and founded Old Bluff Church a year later. Rev. Campbell also founded Barbecue Church and Long Street Church (also in the Upper Cape Fear region) and served all of them as preacher until 1776 when, threatened about his prayers supporting the Patriot Cause, he moved to Guilford County.
The current structure on the site was built in 1855.
The church continued under a series of ministers until 1908 when the congregation moved to a location in Wade.
The church building fell into disrepair, but was fully renovated in 1929. A trust has been established to keep up the building, grounds and cemetery. The church building is used for annual reunions in September.
The church grounds and cemetery are open everyday until 5 pm.
