The Allan Herschell Company, of North Tonawanda, NY, began building carousels in 1915. One of their carousels, which was built in 1925 can be found in the coastal town of Old Lyme, CT, on Hartford Avenue, the main road leading to Sound View Beach.
The carousel as twenty carved wooden horses and two stationary seats. open evenings from 7pm to 9pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It is housed a building next door to an ice cream shop and gift store. The carousel is a popular gathering place and focal point for early evening activity in Old Lyme.
