In 1933 this area belonged to the Public Utilities Commission and was known as Crocker Amazon Reservoir site. In 1957, the PUC granted the Recreation and Park Commission the right to "occupy, use and improve it."
Since then a number of State Park Bonds and grants have led to many improvements in the outdoor facilities at the park. In the late 1980s, new irrigation, new lighting, reforestation, fencing, a new playground on the Moscow Street side and a new parking lot on the park's east side were completed. In 2000, 3 newly renovated softball fields were dedicated. In 2002 a newly built footballfield, funded by the San Francisco 49ers, opened at the park. In 2008 the replacement of the grass soccer fields with artificial turf, redesigned to accommodate five full-size soccer fields was completed.
