This plaque is located inside the main entrance of the university. It is a ~2m tall, white slab. Inscribed, looking towards the entrance, in the Vietnamese language, is a memorial to the 50th anniversary of the university. From 15th October 1956 to the 15th October 2006.

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) is one of the leading universities in Vietnam, whose alumni have made a name for themselves in various practical fields of endeavour and also in governmental circles.

The university was founded in 1956, at the site of an earlier technical college, with the assistance of the Soviet Union, in the first flush of post-independence, communist/nationalistic fervour. Dedicated to the idea that, as Vietnam had to rebuilt itself, it would need engineers to do just that. Over the decades the university has steadily grown in size and importance.

This is a large institution, with ~40,000 students and ~2,000 academic staff. There is a multitude of departments and faculties, all centred around practical subjects with technology or engineering in the title. Most of the buildings look a little worn, but are entirely serviceable. It is a wide and spacious campus, surprisingly attractive—trees, grass, and flowers, given the large number of engineers present.

The university is located in central Hanoi. Entry is unrestricted. The waymark location—there is a big, white rock, near the campus centre, with the name of the university inscribed. Normally, I use the main entrance, but this somehow seemed more fitting.
