Elevation sign at one of two summits (Lord Ellis Summit) on Calif. Hwy. 299 between Willow Creek and Blue Lake. To the east of this summit, drainage goes into Redwood Creek which flows in to the Pacific, near Orick, CA. To the west of this summit, drainage goes into Long Prairie Creek, which joins the Mad River which flows in to the Pacific, near Arcata, CA.
The summit was named after Blue Lake businessman Edward Ellis and gold mine owner William Lord. They both depended on pack trains for business survival and they petitioned the government for improved access across these mountains. As a result an improved mule trail was completed in 1895. (
