The Georgian style residence was built 1924-1925 for successful businessman Sir Robert Anderson. The house was designed by Christchurch architect Cecil Wood. The house is constructed of reinforced concrete with white cement on the exterior and plaster on the interior. The house was originally surrounded by 120 hectare (300 acres) of land, it now has 24 hectares (60 acres) of lawns, gardens and bush. The house and grounds were donated to the Invercargill in 1951 after the deaths of Sir Robert (1942) and his wife (1951). The grounds are maintained as a park and the house as an art museum specializing local and New Zealand art.
