Rae Wilson Sleight (1916-1986) started the North Platte Canteen in December of 1941. Comprised of volunteers, the canteen served over 6 million soldiers at the North Platte railroad station. Their efforts were even noticed by president Roosevelt.
This bronze statue depicts Rae Wilson standing with an apple in one hand and a basket of food in the other and serves as a memorial to all who served at the canteen. The inscription on the plaque reads as follows:
The Canteen Lady statue, depicting Rae Wilson Sleight, was donated by the Everett and Leota Bebee Fund at the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation. During WWII Leota Bebee volunteered at the North Platte Canteen and served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. Everett Bebee served in the US Army during WWII. Leota was an original board member of the 20th Century Veterans' Memorial Association. |
