This sculpture pays tribute to Herman the Sturgeon, a famous fish which makes appearances each summer at the Oregon State Fair. Like "Lassie," there has been more than one Herman. The original Herman began making appearance at the fair in the 1930s. The Oregon State Department of Fish & Wildlife brought Herman nearly every year into the 1980s. When not attending the fair, Herman spent the rest of his time at a fish hatchery and was allegedly stolen in the 1980s, although I've seen differing accounts. He has since been replaced twice by new "Hermans." The fish are White Sturgeon which live in northwest rivers and can grow to more than ten feet in length and live to more than 100 years of age.

The sculpture is west of the horse stadium, not far from the giant "Spirit of Oregon" sculpture. I would estimate it as six to eight feet in length.
