Eric started his career as an entertainer under his birth name of Bartholomew. It is not known when he took his home town's name, Morecambe, as his stage name. His theatrical partner also had a stage name of Ernie Wise, born Ernest Wiseman.
Eric's parents, George and Sadie, lived in 48 Buxton Street when their only child was born. Most births were home deliveries at that time, but 48's roof leaked and his aunt's house at 42 was deemed a better house in which to be born. They soon moved to a bigger house on Christie Avenue, where there is a yellow plaque on the house.
His birth place at 42 Buxton Street did have a similar yellow plaque but after repainting the plaque currently is not outside on display according to the guide Peter wade, who remembers seeing the yellow plaque before the house was decorated. Buxton Street N 54 04.111 W 02 51.325
Eric attended the school behind his Christie Avenue home. Not a brilliant scholar. His mother paid for private lessons in dancing, singing and musical instruments. Eric was an accomplished musician, dancer and entertainer. He appeared on many stages before leaving school in variety shows and contests. As his father had many brothers and sisters, much of the audience could have been Bartholomews to support Eric. Many of Eric's early venues still exist but are now used differently.
When his headmaster was asked by Eric's mother whether private school tuition might help Eric, he suggested this would be a waste of good money. Eric described his time at school as 7 years of purgatory.
Eric died from a heart attack and his ashes are scattered in St Nicholas Churchyard, Harpenden. (
