Some children fishing on a lake drag up the body of Agnes Gray. Agnes Gray, despite having advanced cancer, had been bludgeoned to death by an iron bar. Her cottage had been ransacked. There is, however, a key found around her neck, but it is not know what it fits. Her car is also missing.

When Barnaby and Troy go through Agnes’s things they find that she has been making very large donations to animal charities. Her cousin Esslyn Carmichael is her executor and is handed an envelope by her solicitor. It contains a list of financial dealings which Esslyn uses to blackmail someone. He destroys the original paperwork, but transfers the details onto a floppy disk.

After a public appeal by Barnaby, Peggy Marshall comes forward. Miss Marshall had been Agnes’s mentor when she entered the Catholic Church. She tells Barnaby that Agnes had told her that she had done a great wrong and sought atonement.

Agnes and Esslyn were interested in amateur dramatics. Esslyn, in particular was leading man in the production of Amadeus. During the first night Esslyn is supposed to cut his throat with a prop razor. Someone has substituted a real razor and he cuts his throat and bleeds to death on stage. There appear to be many people who would want Esslyn dead. His ex wife is in the cast and is bitter. His present wife has just been caught in bed with another man and was to be divorced by Esslyn, and there is the question of the figures he received from Agnes. The stage manager’s old, mentally confused, father was also back stage and he later jumps from the roof of a building

One of the cast, Colin Smy confesses to switching the razor, But Barnaby guesses he is covering for his son David. David Smy admits to putting Vim on some cakes used on stage, but wasn’t responsible for the razor.

Things look up for Barnaby when a tea stall holder phones in. He’s seen Agnes’s car in an alley several times. Troy is despatched up the alley with the key to find the lock up it belongs to. He eventually succeeds. In the lock up is a hoard of valuable religious artefacts. Agnes had been involved in art thefts from churches across Europe. She would obviously have needed transport and Barnaby works out that Harold Winstanley, the director of the Causton theatre, had the transport. Esslyn had tried to blackmail Winstanley over the art thefts and Agnes’s murder, and Whinstanley had changed the razor to keep Esslyn quiet.
