Würzburg Central Station is a major station in northern Bavarian with a number of key rail lines passing through the city. The current station is a 1950's Modern style station with concrete pillar front. Following the war the decision was made to build an entirely new station for the city. In 1952 construction began, but it wasn't until 1961 that it was completed. There is a great hall, ticket center, shops and baggage room. Over the years it has been modernized and now has five raised platforms reached by underground tunnels. In the plaza in front of the station is the St Kilian fountain which was a gift from Prince Regent Luitpold to his native city in 1895.
