Began 1854 as Cross City, Proximity to Tennessee River and the railroads made it of great strategic value during the Civil War. Battle of Corinth fought here, Oct. 3-4, 1862.

A different marker on Main Street. This is a second marker in a different location. The first marker N 34* 56.040 W 088* 31.261 is located by a parking lot near the RailRoad Depot, on N. Fillmore Street [State 145] before Cruise Street. The second marker N 34* 56.372 W 088* 31.138 is located in the median of the road [Main Street also state 145] at the end of N. Fillmore Street in front of First Baptist Church. There is approx. 7 blocks different in these markers, approx. 0.6 mile.
