This is a well preserved lighthouse with much of its old support exterior building structures either intact or illustrated in foundation block. The light is no longer in service but had a second-order Fresnel lens. An actual lens similar to the original lens for the lighthouse is in the bottom for all to view. The location of the original lens for this lighthouse is unknown.
This is the only lighthouse in SC that you can climb. The catwalk is 132 feet above the ground, so you get a nice view of the surrounds.
The historic Hunting Island lighthouse was originally constructed in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after is was destroyed during the Civil War. It was decommissioned in June of 1933.
