Date of Crash: 01/16/1962

Aircraft Model: B-47E

Military or Civilian: Military

Cause of Crash:
Exact cause is unknown. Plane was part of the 380th Bombardment Wing out of Plattsburgh Air Force Base. They were on a training mission to practice low-altitude bombing runs over Watertown (Ft Drum). last radio transmission was at 2 AM and were expected back at 7 AM, but they were never heard from again. Park rangers identified the crash from wreckage visible on the summit, and from partially opened parachutes. The first searchers up Wright Peak found the snow all across the summit soaked in JP4 jet fuel. Conjecture is that the plane just clipped a rocky outcrop southwest of the summit (where the plaque was placed) and momentum carried much of the disintegrating plane over the summit and into the col between Wright Peak and Algonquin Peak. One account claims that although three of the parachutes were open when the bodies were found, they had not been deployed so much as ripped open.
