In the days of the California gold rush Shasta was the county seat of Shasta County, California. When the gold mines declined and the railroad bypassed the town it became a virtual ghost town. Today it is preserved as a California State Historical Park. The Shasta Union Cemetery in on a hillside and is not mowed. There is no sign marking the cemetery, but there is a fence around the grounds. There are approximately 200 graves in the cemetery.
