The Schauspielhaus (=play house) is located at the Heimplatz, a square that is inofficially called 'Pfauen'. It has 750 seats.
Constructed 1892 it became very famous after the rise of the Nazis in Germany. During World War II it staged many anti-fascist plays. Several works of Bertolt Brecht were here shown for the first time. After Hitler's occupation of Austria the Schauspielhaus was the largest free Theater in the German-speaking countries.
After the war it kept its important role and saw many world premiers of plays written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Max Frisch and others.
