This official North Carolina marker stands on the western edge of a large area which once housed the maintenance buildings and offices for NCRR. Several hundred people were employed here, and the railroad created a supporting infrastructure, including a school and general store.
A fire in 1918 destroyed many of the buildings. However, the two which remain are well worth a detour off US-70 or the Interstate--especially if one likes trains and their history!
At the site: Victorian-style passenger depot. Old locomotive repair building, refurbished as an Amtrack station. Model of original building layout and many historic photographs (inside the Amtrack station at N36 5.660, W079 26.080). Caboose. A sandwich/coffee shop (Danny's Cafe) directly across the street, featuring a dozen pictures of old locomotives on the wall.
Directions: From I-85 Exit 147, go north on NC87 (Main St) to the Alamance County Courthouse. Go 270 degrees around the traffic cirle and proceed west on Elm Street (which is still NC87). Follow NC87 for about 2 miles. You will see Amtrack pointer signs as you approach the railroad complex. The Company Shops Amtrack station and historic displays will be on the right. The 1890's depot, caboose, and historic marker G-89 will be on the left. Free public parking available at both buildings.
Visit Instructions:Photos of your visit to the marker are required, but PLEASE, no old vacation photos taken just because it was there!
Comments about your visit, interesting nearby areas and any significant information you may have on this waymark are encouraged.
Most of all, enjoy the History that North Carolina has to offer! From the Mountains to the Ocean .. it's all here!
