During the last months of the Second World War there were combats in and around Iasi, opposing Germans and Soviets. Then the war was over, but an outbreak of typhoid killed a fair number of Soviet occupiers. All this was the reason for the creation of a "Soviet Army" area in the main cemetery of Iasi, with a monument and the tombs of those who died far from their homes. A few of these tombs are just marked as "Erou Sovietic" - Soviet Hero. Unknown young men.
In a contiguous zone, one will find the tombs of Romanian soldiers, also from the Second World War.
