GI-punkterne etableres af Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen. Årsagen til,
at punkterne kaldes for GI-punkter, er, at de tidligere blev
etableret af Geodætisk Institut.
I 1989 blev Kort & Matrikelstyrelsen grundlagt ved en sammenlægning
af Geodætisk Institut, Matrikeldirektoratet og Søkortarkivet.
