This church and meetinghouse replaced one that was just south of the current location. The steeple was added in 1799 and the bell in 1826. The clock was given to the town in 1864 and installed in the steeple. It has continuously used as a meeting house and Church with the Unitarian-Universalist affiliation.
In 1824 a schism developed within the parishioners over Doctrinal lines and some moved to the church across the street. This was fairly typical in New England with a split between Unitarians and Congregational factions. This also coincided with the final separation of church State in Cohasset with the meeting house building becoming a privately owned structure. Town funding to the church ceased.
