This concrete elevator consists of fifteen silos in the central core with five more in a line to the east and, at present, three steel grain tanks to the west. It has a capacity of 27,000 metric tonnes (ca. 1,250,000 bushels) and a handling rate of 1,300 metric tonnes (ca. 60,000 bushels) per hour. This is one of only eight large Parrish & Heimbecker elevators still in operation in Alberta.
Bow Island Siding Elevator
Bow Island P&H Elevator is situated in the heart of irrigation country half-way between Medicine Hat and Taber, and is 25 miles north of Foremost. The irrigated land is surrounded by excellent dryland farming . Our main crops handled are spring wheat and durum, with smaller amounts of soft wheat, canola and barley. Irrigated yields have surpassed the 100 bu. mark and the dryland averages 30-35, with 50 not unheard of in the better years. We service the export markets at Vancouver and Thunder Bay, with a small amount of winter rail shipping as well as shipments into Ellison Mills in Lethbridge. Bow Island is well known as the home of the “Spitz Sunflowers”.
