Before the drawbridge is the monument of Lady Carcas.
Lady Carcas was the wife of Sarazenenkönigs Balaack.
Charlemagne had pitched his camp before Carcassonne and wanted to starve the city. The siege lasted five years, during which almost the entire garrison was starved.
