In Eckville, along Kittanny Ridge, is the North Overlook within the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
To get to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, from I-78, take the exit for Route 61 and travel north through Port Clinton to the intersection with Route 895. Turn right onto this road and follow it to Hawk Mountain Road on the right. Take a right onto this road and travel on this road to the parking lot at the top of the ridge. Head to the nature center for Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and pay your fee ($8 at the time of visit in fall 2014) and then use the map to follow the trail to North Lookout. You will first pass South Lookout, at 1280 ft high, which has a very good view, but North Lookout is better. The trail to South Lookout has a gentle grade and fairly easy to walk along. the trail from there to North Lookout, at 1490 ft, is steeper and more rugged. The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary web site rates the trail as 'moderate.' There are several small lookouts along the way.
The North Lookout has a wide 220 degree vista, looking generally northwest to south. There are two points to look from. The northern part looks off the mountain to the valley, where you can see agricultural fields and small settlements. The second point looks down the ridge and generally south of the ridge, which is mostly woods. This ridge has great opportunities to see all kinds of birds, but especially birds of prey. There are volunteers/staff people there making observations and answering questions. While there, a black vulture, a red tail hawk, and a raven were spotted.
This overlook is definitely worth going 'the extra mile' for.
