This striking and heartbreaking memorial to missing children everywhere features an exquisitely evocative sculpture by Sam Nettles. A nude mother leans close to her new baby, nestled safely in the mother's crossed legs. The father leans over her shoulder, also gazing at the baby, while praying hands form a symbolic roof above their heads, almost as if protecting them.
Two plaques below the sculpture read as follows:
"THE SANCTUARY
Sam Nettles, artist"
" “The Sanctuary” is both a shelter and a memorial. The arms and hands form a shelter and represent protection, our gift to our children. The shelter also forms memorial in which resides a sacred spiritualism that is universal and primal.
In the family grouping, the child completes the circle, making the couple of family. The parents focus on their child and in turn, the child focuses its love and trust on the parents. This simple exchange is one of the essential truths of life. We all love our children and want to protect them."
Let us hope that we can begin to try to understand and appreciate that which we memorialize -- the families, parents, and friends of lost and missing children."
This memorial will hit you right in your emotions, especially if you are a parent.
Blasterz pray for the missing children and searching families. May God grant them peace and answers. We also pray that waymarkers who come here will be an observer of, and not a personal experiencer, of such tragedy.
