Located at the corner of Main and Parker Streets is Joe's Creekside Cafe. This building once housed the city's post office from 1937 until 1968 when it was replaced by a larger building. This building housed the Old Post Office Seafood and Grill for many years until becoming the current establishment. There are still murals inside which were done by Works Progress Administration (WPA) artists as part of the New Deal Act signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to get America's economy and workforce active again after the Great Depression. I believe this post office was also funded through WPA dollars. I came across a historical article that mentions this post office being built on the same site where the Raleigh Hotel once occupied before being burned to the ground from a fire. The post office was built for $16,000. The marble date stone is located on the south side of the building facing Main Street and has been painted over but is still legible and reads:

HENRY MORGENTHAU JR
SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY
JAMES A FARLEY
POSTMASTER GENERAL

LOUIS A SIMON
SUPERVISING ARCHITECT

NEAL A MELICK
SUPERVISING ENGINEER

1937

The Living New Deal website managed by the University of California at Berkeley contains a web page of this former post office here.

Year of construction: 1937
