Die original erhalten gebliebene Holzkonstruktion des Chinesischen Turmes von Donaustauf stammt aus dem Jahre 1842. Das Donaustaufer Schloss brannte beim großen Marktbrand im Jahre 1880 völlig nieder; der Chinesische Turm in Osten des Fürstengartens blieb verschont. Nachdem die fürstliche Familie von Thurn und Taxis 1899 Schloss Prüfening in Regensburg als neue Sommerresidenz erworben hatte, wurde der Turm im Jahre 1902 in Donaustauf abgebaut und im Schlossgarten von Prüfening wieder aufgebaut.
Mit der Gründung des Fördervereins begannen die Bemühungen, den Chinesischen Turm vor dem Verfall zu retten und ihn wieder zurück nach Donaustauf zu bringen. Am 17. September 1999 wurde der Chinesische Turm im Fürstengarten Donaustauf eingeweiht.
